The DevOps a five-person team actually needs

You do not need Kubernetes. You do need four things, and most small teams are missing at least two.

By Omar Farooq ·

Small teams are sold infrastructure built for problems they do not have. Here is the shortlist that genuinely matters before you are twenty engineers.

A deploy nobody has to think about

Push to main, tests run, it goes out. If deployment involves a person remembering a sequence, it will eventually be done wrong at the worst possible moment. This is a day of work and it pays back within a month.

Alerts that mean something

Two alerts you will act on beat forty you have learned to ignore. Start with uptime and error rate. Add more only when an incident proves you needed one.

A backup you have restored

An untested backup is a belief, not a backup. Restore it into a scratch environment twice a year. We have found broken backup jobs at three clients this way — every one of them believed they were covered.

One way back

Whatever your rollback plan is, it needs to be one command and it needs to have been rehearsed. Kubernetes can wait. This cannot.
